The secret garden
Frances Scott Hodgson was born in England but moved to the United States in 1865, near Knoxville, Tennessee. She traveled frequently between the U.K. and the U.S., and her book, The Secret Garden, was actually published in the U.S.! This story is about the orphan Mary Lennox, whose spoiled lifestyle is thought to be in jeopardy when she is dropped off at her uncle's estate, Misselthwaite Manor. However, her attitude is changed after discovering a secret doorway in an overgrown garden, which she thinks to be magical. She thinks the magical powers of the garden will cure her young cousin, Colin, who is destined to die, so she is determined to get Colin to love the secret garden as much as she does.
My Antonia, by Willa Cather, is published in 1918. This story is about Antonia Shimerda and is told by her childhood friend, Jim Burden. Jim tells of how greatly his life is impacted by this Bohemian girl and the hardships she faces as an immigrant child of immigrant parents.

A Daughter of the Land, written by Gene Stratton-Porter, is published in 1918. This novel is about an Indiana farm girl, Kate Bates, who doesn't want to follow her parents in becoming a farmer. She decides to leave home, but she eventually realizes that she does indeed want to own her own farm.
